| Creation City Seattle After moving to Seattle in 1991, I spend 8 years teaching and working as a sideman. Julie Dee, who often hired me in this period, introduced me to Norwood 'Billy' Poindexter, well known in the Seattle jazz world as a leading jazz congero and as the son of the legendary saxophonist-composer Pony Poindexter. Billy brought in several other musicians (Steve Banks, drumset; Brad Buck, guitar) and we re-formed Creation City, performing and recording many of the songs I had written with Mel Wiggins back in L.A. The two CD's we recorded each feature the leading Garfield High School Jazz Band saxophonist of that year - Ben Roseth on 'Live at Chandler's Cove', and Ben White on 'Blues for Pony.' These albums also feature some Pony Poindexter compositions. NORWOOD POINDEXTER (congas) now leads his own group, the Poindexter Jazz Quintet, which has become very popular with Seattle jazz clubs. We continue to play together once a month making music for the Bethesda Lutheran Church. Billy has one CD out, 'Live at the Berkshire', and now composing pieces for a planned second album. BEN ROSETH won a full scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Since moving East, he has performed at leading jazz clubs in Boston and New York, and also worked with Latin jazz and folk groups in South and Central America. His own group, The Here and Now, has recorded several CDs. BEN WHITE won a full scholarship to Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. While continuing to perform with the Emory Jazz Ensemble and with his own group, Paper Covers Rock, he is pursuing a film career, working as a television producer for Turner Broadcasting. |
